Privacy and terms
In short
LibStudy lets students tell each other when a study seat frees up. We keep your name and your ETH email address so you can sign in, we show your name next to the seat you announce, and we delete things as soon as they are no longer needed. We do not sell data, show ads or track you.
Who runs this
LibStudy is a student project. It is not run by, endorsed by or affiliated with ETH Zürich or the University of Zurich. Questions and requests about your data: privacy@libstudy.com.
What we store
- Your ETH email address, to send you a login code and to recognise you next time. Other users never see it.
- Your display name, taken from your email address or typed by you.
- The seats you announce or claim: the place, the optional position and seat detail, and the times you give.
- Notifications the app creates for you, such as reminders and hand-off codes.
- A push address for your device, only if you allow notifications.
- A sign-in token kept in your browser so you stay signed in.
We do not ask for a password, a student number, a photo or your location. A point on the map is stored only when you place it yourself for a seat.
Who can see what
- Signed-in users see your display name, the place, the position, the seat detail and the time you plan to leave.
- The hand-off code is shown only to you and the one person taking or giving the seat.
- Nobody outside ETH can sign in: only @ethz.ch and @student.ethz.ch addresses are accepted.
How long we keep it
- Seats: deleted one day after they end.
- Notifications: deleted after two days.
- Login codes: valid for ten minutes, stored only in scrambled form, then deleted.
- Your account: deleted after 30 days without use.
- At any time: “Delete my account” at the bottom of the app removes everything at once.
How it is protected
Connections to LibStudy are encrypted (HTTPS). The data sits with our hosting providers in the European Union and is encrypted on their disks. Only the people running the project can reach the database. No system is perfectly secure, so please do not put anything sensitive in a seat description.
Other services involved
- Supabase (database and sign-in) and Netlify (serving the page) host LibStudy.
- Resend delivers the login email, so it processes your email address.
- OpenStreetMap supplies the map and Google Fonts the typefaces. Your browser contacts them directly, so they see your IP address.
- Apple, Google or Mozilla deliver push notifications to your device if you turn them on.
We use no analytics, no advertising and no tracking cookies.
Your rights
Under Swiss data protection law (FADP) and, where it applies, the GDPR, you can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected or have it deleted. Write to the address above, or use “Delete my account”.
Terms of use
- Not an official reservation. A claim in LibStudy is an agreement between two students. Libraries and ETH do not recognise it, and their rules and staff instructions always come first.
- No guarantee. A seat may not be free when you arrive: people leave late, change plans or enter wrong times. Leaving times marked as estimates are just that.
- Occupancy figures for University of Zurich libraries come from the university's public display and may be out of date or wrong.
- Be fair. Announce only a seat you are actually sitting at, give honest times, and do not hold seats for people who are not there.
- Your belongings are your responsibility. Do not leave valuables to hold a seat.
- We may remove posts or accounts that misuse the service, and we may change or stop the service at any time.
- LibStudy is provided as it is, free of charge, without warranty. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses from using it.
